The JPI Cultural Heritage and Global Change (JPI CH) condemns, in the strongest terms, the unprovoked war waged by Russia on Ukraine, a free and independent European state. It expresses its support to the Ukrainian people in these hours of fear, suffering and despair and its admiration for their courage and dignity. The JPI CH also joins in the support to those who, in Russia and in Belarus, often at the risk of their lives, speak out and demonstrate against this aggression. The JPI CH will do its utmost to help Ukrainian researchers and all those involved in the cultural heritage sector.
The Heritage Research Hub, created and curated by the JPI CH, is a free and collaborative platform on and for cultural heritage research. On this page you will find information such as grants, calls and funding opportunities that could be helpful to Ukrainian researchers in these difficult times. A map of solidarity for Ukraine
Creatives Unite collected all the initiatives happening in the European Member States and created a map to visualise the wave of support towards the cultural and creative sector in Ukraine. From funding opportunities for Ukrainian artists, events dedicated to the reviving of the sector and projects designed by the European Commission for the support of Ukrainian cultural and creative professionals the map showcases past and upcoming actions.
“Culture Helps / Культура допомагає”. Collaboration grants for integration through culture (third call)
A project co-funded by the EU Creative Europe Programme under a dedicated call for proposals to support Ukrainian displaced people and the Ukrainian Cultural and Creative Sectors. This project is implemented by Insha Osvita (UA) and zusa (DE). The project includes a series of call for proposals for collaboration grants. Under these calls, you can receive up to €40.000 for the implementation of international partnership projects between 2 or 3 organisations, focused on the integration through Culture for people, who were forced to leave their homes because of the Russian full-scale war against Ukraine.
Enhancing Capacities in Ukraine for Cultural Heritage First Aid and Recovery Planning
With the generous support of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, ICCROM, within the framework of its flagship programme of First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis (FAR), is pleased to announce a call for participation in the training for Ukraine’s first national team of cultural first aiders.
European Commission launches the ERA4Ukraine platform to support Ukrainian researchers
The portal is a one-stop-shop for information and support services to Ukraine-based researchers and researchers fleeing Ukraine. The portal brings together initiatives at EU level, per country and from non-governmental groups. It aims to help affected researchers find housing and job opportunities, facilitate the recognition of their diplomas, and offer other services. MSCA projects are encouraged to post their vacancies for Ukrainian researchers through the “Science4Refugees” tab in the portal.
Programme Pause opens a special call for emergency assistance to Ukrainian researchers in danger.
An emergency financial aid to finance the stay of a Ukrainian researcher, and his/her family if applicable, for a period of three months is proposed to voluntary French institutions. The amount of the financial aid will be a lump sum based on the number of people in the family unit (single person, couple, family). This emergency hosting in France may allow the researcher to prepare, in connection with a host institution, an application to the PAUSE program according to the regular procedures and criteria of the program, based on co-funding.
The MSA Fellowship “Memory Scholars at Risk”: Call for Host Institutions
The Memory Studies Association offers funds for two fellowships of 4000 euros each to support memory scholars at risk. The MSA is looking for institutions across the world that would like to provide a place of academic refuge including matching funds or equivalent in-kind assistance. Such institutions can contact scholars at risk known to them or seek advice from the MSA, which is collecting information on colleagues needing support. While the MSA is currently able to offer two fellowships, it is continuing efforts to raise more funds for additional fellowships.
Ukraine – the Netherlands Urban Network
Ukraine – the Netherlands Urban Network is a growing community of Ukrainians in the Netherlands, Dutch architectural and spatial planning organisations and other spatial professionals who joined forces to exchange knowledge in the context of the reconstruction of Ukraine. Ukrainian architects, landscape designers and urbanists seeking work can showcase their CV and/or portfolio on a platform, while design companies can easily upload their offers for various forms of employment within the collective labour agreement for architectural firms. In this way, we hope to pair spatial professionals from Ukraine with job offers.

École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne offers temporary placements for Ukrainian researchers
The EPFL offers paid placements for researchers (post-doc level and above) of a Ukrainian university or research institution for 3-8 months in the areas of digital humanities, cultural heritage, history of science, digital musicology, digital museology, social media, citizen observatories, misinformation etc.
NEP4DISSENT Establishes an Emergency Fund for Ukrainian Scholars
NEP4DISSENT is an EU-funded, international scholarly network dedicated to research on resistance and dissent in former socialist countries. Our aims and objectives are presented in this report. We are a community of scholars from 37 countries who stand for our colleagues from Ukraine in this dark time. We call all members of our network to disseminate this call as wide as possible and as soon as possible, to allow immediate distribution of the support. For scholars who reside in Ukraine, we offer VM grants, to support collaboration with colleagues participating in NEP4DISSENT in a virtual setting. Examples of such collaboration include, but are not limited to:
- Documenting instances of dissent and resistance in Ukraine, yesterday and today, including oral histories, web-scraping, etc.
- Digital preservation of endangered cultural assets broadly related to dissent and resistance in Ukraine, yesterday and today
- Content preparation, including online lectures, workshops, webinars, podcasts, virtual exhibits etc.
- Virtual mentoring schemes to support capacity building and development of new skills among young researchers and innovators

The Foundation Maison des sciences de l’homme committed to support researchers affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Atlas program offers short-term fellowships of two or three months in France for international postdoc researchers who have presented their thesis from 2016. The research stay is designed to enable researchers to conduct research studies in France: field enquiries, library and archives work.
The DEA program enables foreign scientific professionals from all continents to be invited for a period of four to six weeks to support their work in the SHS in France. A monthly allowance of €3400 is awarded for transport and living expenses. In addition, the FMSH provides support for visa applications and logistics.
Maison Suger wants to facilitate the conditions of scientific residency in Paris for every researchers affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Submitted applications will be given priority.
French Minister of Culture presented support funds for receiving Ukrainian artists and culture professionals
The €750,000 emergency reception programme has enabled the establishment of a telephone reception platform, in Ukrainian and Russian languages, for the guidance of Ukrainian artists and cultural professionals. The emergency reception program will also fund the reception in residence of Ukrainian artists and cultural professionals and their families for a period of 3 months, through the program PAUSE, for residencies within the network of public institutions of the ministry, on the one hand, and with the Cité internationale des arts on the other.

The Cultural Heritage Studies Program, hosted at the Department of Medieval Studies, combines theoretical and practical education, offering a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches with a strong emphasis on practical knowledge and skills based on fieldwork, and internships with local, regional and global heritage organisations. Support for art history researchers from the Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA)
INHA is dedicating specific opportunities for researchers from Ukraine. To apply for INHA’s “visiting scholar” grants. For the year 2023, in order to encourage national and international exchanges, the National Institute of Art History (INHA) will host researchers for a period of between 1 and 3 months. Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO)
We are a group of cultural heritage professionals – librarians, archivists, researchers, programmers – working together to identify and archive at-risk sites, digital content, and data in Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions while the country is under attack. We are using a combination of technologies to crawl and archive sites and content, including the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, the Browsertrix crawler and the ArchiveWeb.page browser extension and app of the Webrecorder project.

Support to Ukrainian displaced people and the Ukrainian Cultural and Creative Sectors
The war in Ukraine has devastating effects on the Ukrainian cultural heritage and on cultural organisations and artists that cannot operate and reach out to their national and international audience. Additionally, many Ukrainian displaced people and children fleeing the war and currently staying in other locations in Ukraine or in other Creative Europe countries will not be able to return to their pre-war locations because of destruction. Those staying in other Creative Europe countries will have to interact with their new communities to facilitate their integration. Culture and the arts have proven to be an efficient tool to connect people from different background and facilitate integration. The objective of the special call is to help the Ukrainian cultural and creative organisations。
